Jackie Chan helps Thong Chai raise $8.6 million during charity show

A staggering $8.67 million: That's how much the Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution (STCMI) managed to raise in three hours. Not too shabby an amount for its first-ever televised charity show.

And it's largely thanks to action superstar Jackie Chan who led a power-packed contingent of foreign celebrities to help pump funds for the free hospital. Jackie is its ambassador.

And true to his duties to helm a charitable organization for the first time, the Hong Kong actor went all out for the cause, distributing flowers, taking photos with kids, and helping wheel a patient.

The TV fundraiser, held at MediaCorp's TV theatre last night, featured a string of stirring performances by local and foreign personalities. The buildup to the evening was, however, firmly anchored by the stellar cast of overseas stars.

And they did not disappoint.

Manchester United 2 - 1 Liverpool

Manchester United came from behind to clamber back to the Premier League summit with a 2-1 victory to trample on Liverpool's top-four hopes.

Park Ji-sung headed home the winner after an hour, securing the spoils after Wayne Rooney's 33rd goal of the season had controversially levelled Fernando Torres' fifth-minute opener.

Although victory was not achieved without a nervy ending, during which Torres spurned a glorious chance to equalise, the result kept United's noses in front of Arsenal and Chelsea.

For Liverpool though, fight was not enough.

When they scored four times in the corresponding fixture last season, it appeared to open the door to that championship Holy Grail.

Not only has that been proved fool's gold, a 10th defeat of the season leaves them requiring slip-ups from Tottenham and others just to finish in a Champions League spot. What Rafael Benitez claimed before Christmas was a guaranteed fourth-place finish could hardly be further away.
